REMINDER FOR NOVEMBER 30th

Did the following:
  1. Twitter tutorial (and signed Danner up)
  2. Discussed a 'summer boot camp' for other colleagues here at school (as well as having PLP members teach a Last Friday session).
  3. Recorded the session as a podcast (for future review)

November 17th meeting

Do you feel like Rob?
Assignment

  • Sue: You want to do something different, but it is overwhelming on ohw to get there...esp. as a perfectionist (like most teachers). I feel like I need to know it all first. I don't know what 'it' looks like when I want to tell my kids what to do.
  • Lauren: Intimidated by having to do all the posts, etc. I can do the stuff in my classroom (experiment with my kids), but hard to do all the PLP pieces that are not related directly to my students. I just want to get the theory into practice (w/ my kids).
  • Chris: I want to jump in and do the cool stuff, but I have all this stuff that is already lined up that I have to fit in...and to have to re-vamp my curriculum to do all of this? I almost need downtime to re-think/re-do some things. I have done a lot of brainstorming of possible projects to see how to make the connection to create a product out of it. To actually sit down and plan in addition to my current things feels like a tangent; takes a lot of time.
  • S: Now I have to figure out how to 'use' the technology. I feel like I need to figure it out first.
  • L: Learning how to 'put it out there as it is' (not being perfect). Learning how to trust the 'real'.
  • CH: Different on different levels (high school vs. other levels?).
  • Catherine: Funny for my HS kids re: the Spanish rap and hearing the mistakes.
  • L: Could record a lesson and send to a parent of a student who is sick/absent.
  • S: I wanted to ask some of my kids who do some of this tech to help me do this, but not sure I want to make extra work for them.
  • CD: Could be cool for him to help.
  • L: It doesn't have to be perfect.
  • S: I might have to do it (even if not perfect): just record and try to get it out there.
  • Christian: Mentions DY who needed to record a lecture or two (Flip camera) so his kids could watch him while he was gone on a trip.
  • Jason: Suggested that DY do it in mini-chunks. Record via Flip, name it, upload files.

*

Cool focus showing up in our conversation:
  1. No need for perfection
  2. Do mini-lessons/recordings
  3. Authenticity is more important than perfectly scripted
  4. Get kids to help
  5. Like our F2F PLP team experience: learn from each other in conversation (even more so than the 'network' on a virtual level)

October 30th meeting

1. Jason hands out brand-shiny-new Toshiba netbooks to all 6 of our PLP team (with a rockin' cool Snowball mic, too!)

2. Jason -- having installed Audacity to everyone's netbook -- teaches everyone how to:

  • record a podcast via Audacity
  • upload the podcast file to Gcast
  • use iTunes to manage the podcast
  • upload the podcast MP3 file to Edline (and a blog, wiki, etc)

October 13th meeting

1. We agreed to do a 2-Hour Deep Dive during our next "Last Friday". These will be our focus points:
  • How to create Podcasts
  • How to create Vodcast
  • Exploring Slideshare (upload a PowerPoint presentation to a website)
  • Try out Screenr of parts of our session

2. Additional goals/ideas we're considering:
  • that each of us will eventually create an on-line vodcast 'tutorial' to explain how to use 1 tool (that we originally had trouble with).
  • that we presenting a "Last Friday" session in the spring as a way to a) demonstrate what we've learned and b) to encourage others to join us.
  • that we create an internal version of our larger PLP experience here at Oakridge

Team Goals as of September
30, 2009 (based on the original 'index card' list from Houston)

1. Meet 2x/month as a team; work to develop a true 'team'
2. We invest in the PLP; they know our names when we go to Houston
3. Discover and become comfortable with various web 2.0 tools and strategies.
UPDATE: In the spirit of this, Jason/Christian just created a Web Tools Page for us to start using as we organize our learning process. Let us know what you think. Thanks!
  • make a on-going list
  • tutorials, best practices, case studies
  • brainstorm teaching ideas and projects
  • incorporate into our classes (at least 1)
  • school culture/best practices on a larger level
  • "Last Friday" sessions
4. All of us begin to develop a network beyond Oakridge and the PLP

Initial 'index card' ideas (questions, assumptions, expectations, etc) from Day 1 in Houston:**

  1. I expect to learn more just within our group … being exposed to learning going on in different division.
  2. An awareness of ‘tools’ available fro networking.
  3. Less fear of the ‘tools’.
  4. How/when to network: face to face, video, etc.?
  5. Time management
  6. We will take something back to Oakridge that will foster a different perspective of what teaching involves.
  7. Personally I expect to bring new technology into my classroom to then share with Lower School.
  8. That what we do will not necessarily change the content of what is taught but of what it means to ‘teach’.
  9. Assumption – wrong or right – I don’t know enough about this to do it.
  10. What does Oakridge as a 21st century learning culture really look like?
  11. Assumption: everyone has a role in the process.
  12. Assumption: work together as a ‘team’ for a common
  13. Assumption: work together as a ‘team’ for a common goal for our entire school
  14. Expectation: to be able to incorporate various websites in my classroom
  15. How much time should we invest personally to establish an effective product?
  16. Who should we involve in each stage of the project: administrators, faculty, students, etc.
  17. Expectation: to learn ‘how to’ on a lot of this technology
  18. How should we begin? Simple blogging, set up a group, simple discussion?
  19. Wanting to shift from a “that would be a cool project” approach to “how can my entire curriculum/program be available 24/7?” (for my students, parents, colleagues, etc)
  20. We will meet face to face once or twice a month as an entire group.
  21. How do we move to a tangible ‘project’ that will have ‘value’ at our school…and will increase the # of classrooms/teachers involved?
  22. We will take something back to Oakridge that will foster a different perspective of what teaching involves.
  23. Personally I expect to bring new technology into my classroom to then share with Lower School.
  24. That what we do will not necessarily change the content of what is taught but of what it means to ‘teach’.
  25. Assumption – wrong or right – I don’t know enough about this to do it.
